BOOKS

Every now and then I pick up a book and try to enlighten or entertain myself. If I get both, then good for me. Here are some books that I have read and my thoughts on them...after all, anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book.

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Adichie

May 18, 2009
Excerpt:  "When the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria seceded in 1967 to form the independent nation of Biafra, a bloody, crippling three-year civil war followed. That period in African history is captured with haunting intimacy in this artful page-turner from Nigerian novelist Adichie.
Adichie tells her profoundly gripping story primarily through the eyes and lives of Ugwu, a 13-year-old peasant houseboy who survives conscription into the raggedy Biafran army, and twin sisters Olanna and Kainene, who are from a wealthy and well-connected family. Tumultuous politics power the plot, and several sections are harrowing, particularly passages depicting the savage butchering of Olanna and Kainene's relatives. But this dramatic, intelligent epic has its lush and sultry side as well: rebellious Olanna is the mistress of Odenigbo, a university professor brimming with anticolonial zeal; business-minded Kainene takes as her lover fair-haired, blue-eyed Richard, a British expatriate come to Nigeria to write a book about Igbo-Ukwu art — and whose relationship with Kainene nearly ruptures when he spends one drunken night with Olanna. This is a transcendent novel of many descriptive triumphs, most notably its depiction of the impact of war's brutalities on peasants and intellectuals alike. It's a searing history lesson in fictional form, intensely evocative and immensely absorbing.

Believe me, you will feel like you are Ugwu himself. You will not put the book down and will have a new respect for all our Africans who have to live through civil wars usually fuelled by external forces for their own gains.

The Autobiography of Malcom X - As told by Alex Haley

May 18, 2009
This book just caught me off guard I swear.
I had expected to read of how Malcom X had lived a really straight forward life having being raised with extra ordinary values and discipline by strict parents.

Turns out, he has led the craziest life some of us could ever live. Drugs, hard drugs, harder drugs, alcohol, stealing, gambling, using and mistreating women....all part of his life story.

It has inspired me greatly to realise that every great man we see is just as human as the next person you ...

Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir

March 2, 2009

Although not apparent from its title, Stolen Lives is Malika Oufkir's autobiography, and what a story she has to tell. Born into Morocco's upper crust, she lived the life of luxury the first 19 years of her life. She then lived her next 19 years as an innocent person imprisoned under conditions that were at times so horrific they challenge comprehension by the imagination.

Born in 1953, Malika Oufkir was the eldest daughter of Moroccan General Muhammad Oufkir. When she was five, ...

Small Island - Andrea Levy

February 23, 2009
Excerpt: Hortense It brought it all back to me. Celia Langley. Celia Langley standing in front of me, her hands on her hips and her head in a cloud. And she is saying: 'Oh, Hortense, when I am older' (all her dreaming began with 'when I am older'). "When I am older, Hortense, I will be leaving Jamaica and I will be going to live in England." This is when her voice became high-class and her nose pointed into the air - well, as far as her round flat nose could - and she swayed as she brought...
